Metal Yard supplies paddle spacer flanges, also known as 'paddle blinds and blanks', which are used for line isolation in pipelines carrying liquids, gas or steam. Unlike a permanent line blind, this style of flanged spacer is installed between two existing flanges and blocks flow only when required. This distinction is particularly significant during shutdowns and turnaround operations, as crews require a device that is both swiftly installed and quickly removed.
The design features a single metal disc with a handle, sized to fit between the outer diameters of two mating flanges. Metal Yard most commonly stocks Inconel and stainless steel, though other alloys can be supplied to written specification. Compared with full blind flanges, the lower weight reduces rigging time in confined pipe racks. Good engineering practice for line blind valves and spacers calls for the plate thickness to match the rated pressure class, and each disc is checked against that requirement before dispatch.
Paddle spacers are available in sizes from 15 NB to 48 NB, with ANSI pressure classes 150, 300, 600, 900 and 2500, as well as DIN ratings ND10, ND16 and ND25. Available face types include raised face, flat face and ring-type joint, so they can match the mating flange requirements. Manufacturing complies with the relevant ASME and DIN construction codes, and dimensions can be customised on request when a project specification falls outside the standard range.
These plates are removed during scheduled maintenance, pipeline clearing and pressure testing, then reinstalled once the work is complete. They allow a crew to isolate one section of a line without shutting down the entire system while keeping the rest of the process operating.
