Pipe Weight Calculator

Knowing the exact weight of a pipe before it ships is one of the most basic checks in metal procurement, yet it's also one of the easiest to get wrong when done by hand. Metal Yard India's Pipe Weight Calculator gives buyers, fabricators, and site engineers an accurate weight estimate in seconds, based on material grade, outside diameter, wall thickness, and length.

Whether you're planning a single order or comparing options across several materials, the calculator removes the guesswork from a number that affects freight cost, load planning, and structural design alike. It works for round pipes across the material grades listed below, so the same tool covers most of what a typical order needs.

Pipe Weight Calculator

Max limit is 50 pieces.
Materials Covered by the Pipe Weight Calculator

The calculator supports weight calculations across the material range we stock and supply, including carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, and other specialty grades used in industrial piping. Since density varies from one alloy to the next, even two pipes with identical dimensions can differ meaningfully in weight depending on the material selected. A stainless steel pipe and a carbon steel pipe of the same size, for instance, will not weigh the same once density is factored in. Choosing the correct grade before running the calculation is what keeps the result accurate.

Why Pipe Weight Matters

Pipe weight isn't just a number for the invoice. It shapes several decisions before material ever reaches site.

  • Transport planning: If you know the total weight in advance, you may choose the suitable vehicle, the right loading method and the number of trips so you do not overload or waste capacity.
  • Structural & Support Design: Knowing the pipe's weight is a key piece of knowledge for engineers to appropriately size supports, hangers and foundations, especially for long lines or runs with big diameters.
  • Cost estimation: Being able to give realistic prices and budgets from the start is vital. Weight based pricing is the norm in the metals trade.
  • Handling and Safety: Pipe handling workers need a reliable weight estimate to select the correct lifting equipment and avoid safety dangers when loading and installing.
How to Use the Pipe Weight Calculator

Using the calculator takes only a few steps:

  1. Choose the material from the list for the grade you require for your project.
  2. Enter the outside diameter and wall thickness in the same unit as shown on your drawing or specification.
  3. Enter the length of the pipe, and if calculating for more than one length, the number of parts.
  4. Click on Calculate and the total weight will appear in your chosen unit.
  5. The result reflects the measurements and material you entered, so double-check them.

The result reflects the exact dimensions and material entered, so double-checking these values against your specification sheet before calculating helps avoid ordering errors later.

How Pipe Weight Is Calculated

Pipe weight is derived from the volume of metal in the pipe wall multiplied by the density of the selected material. The standard formula is:

Weight (kg) = π × (Outer Diameter − Wall Thickness) × Wall Thickness × Length × Density ÷ 1000

Length in metres, outer diameter and wall thickness in millimetres, and density in grams per cubic centimetre (7.85 g/cm³ for steel, the same as 7,850 kg/m³).

Example: The result comes out to a value like 40.7 kg per pipe. This result is for a mild steel pipe which has an outside diameter of roughly 60 millimetres, a wall thickness of 5 millimetres and 6 metres long. This assumes a density of about 7,850 kilograms per cubic metre for the steel. Multiply this by the number of pieces. This will give you the total weight of the order.

This same formula applies across other pipe materials, with only the density value changing to reflect the selected grade. That's exactly what the calculator automates: running the calculation instantly instead of requiring manual formula work on every order or line item.
